Frequently Asked Questions

GENERAL

  • Yes. Dr. Jeffrey DeSano is board-certified in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, which ensures rigorous training, clinical expertise, and adherence to the highest safety standards. Board certification is critical as it demonstrates verified experience, advanced surgical skill, and a commitment to ongoing education—providing patients confidence in both cosmetic and reconstructive outcomes.

  • Every patient is unique. During your consultation, we will discuss your goals, medical history, and lifestyle to determine the most appropriate procedure for your needs.

  • During your private consultation with Dr. Jeffrey DeSano, you will receive a personalized assessment of your goals and medical history. We will review the most appropriate procedures for your needs—such as breast augmentation, body contouring, or facial rejuvenation—and discuss expected outcomes, risks, and recovery timelines. Advanced imaging and educational materials may be used to help you visualize your results. Our goal is to ensure you feel confident, informed, and prepared before scheduling surgery.

  • Surgical procedures may take place in a private operating room, an accredited surgical center, or a hospital depending on the procedure type and insurance coverage. Non-elective or reconstructive cases are typically performed in a hospital setting for safety and insurance compliance, while elective aesthetic procedures are often completed in a fully accredited, private surgical facility.

  • Cosmetic surgery focuses on enhancing appearance, while reconstructive surgery restores form and function after trauma, illness, or congenital conditions.

  • Many procedures deliver long-lasting or permanent results. However, factors such as aging, weight fluctuations, and lifestyle can affect outcomes over time.

RECOVERY

  • Recovery times vary depending on the procedure. Some patients return to normal activities within a few days, while others may need several weeks. You will receive detailed post-care instructions tailored to your procedure.

  • Recovery restrictions depend on the procedure but often include avoiding heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, or certain arm and core movements. Patients may also need to sleep in specific positions or avoid prolonged sitting following body contouring procedures. Dr. DeSano will provide a personalized recovery plan to maximize safety and optimal healing.

  • Swelling and bruising are normal after surgery and typically begin to improve within 1–2 weeks. Most patients see substantial improvement by 3–6 weeks, although final results may take several months to fully manifest, especially for procedures like facelift, tummy tuck, or extensive body contouring.

  • Recovery timelines vary by procedure and individual patient factors. Light activities and desk work may be resumed within a few days for minimally invasive procedures like injectables or liposuction, while more extensive surgeries such as tummy tuck, breast reconstruction, or facelift may require 2–4 weeks before returning to work and 6–8 weeks before resuming vigorous exercise. Dr. DeSano provides detailed, individualized guidance during your consultation.

  • Recovery duration depends on the procedure. Most out-of-town patients stay locally for 5–10 days, while more extensive surgeries may require 2–3 weeks. For added support, we can arrange for a night nurse to stay with you during early recovery. This ensures safety, comfort, and personalized care while you are away from home.

  • Most procedures involve minimal scarring, and incisions are placed strategically to be as discreet as possible. Over time, scars generally fade and become less noticeable. Do NOT smoke during this time. The scars will be more prominent.

  • Some discomfort is normal, but most patients describe it as manageable. Pain medication and proper aftercare help ensure a smooth recovery process.

SAFETY & RISKS

  • Patient safety is our top priority. As a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. DeSano performs procedures in accredited facilities and follows the highest standards of care.

We review all risks with you in detail so you can make an informed decision prior to surgery.
